Harry S Lucraft

1894 – 1953

Physician & Photographer

Harry Lucraft was born in Adelaide and graduated in medicine at the University of Edinburgh. When World War I broke out he volunteered for active service. He was appointed Surgeon-Probationer on destroyers in the North Sea, during which time he developed an interest in photography.

In the 1920s, Dr Lucraft moved to Perth and entered a consultant practice in Lake Street with a special interest in cardiology and in 1928 he took up a position at the Perth Hospital as a Physician, where he worked until 1953. In this role, he improved the reputation of the Hospital through his clinical skill, teaching and patient care.

He was known as a skilled amateur photographer and was a member of the Van Raalte Club, a local photographic group whose members experimented to achieve soft effects and details in shadow.

The techniques had implications for radiology too, particularly because at that time X-rays did not capture detail. Using his skills in this area, Dr Lucraft did the clinical photography of the Hospital single-handed for many years. Eventually, he guided the development of a Department of Clinical Photography.

Harry Lucraft died in the Hospital he had served for twenty-five years.

1098 During the early 1980s, the Caloola Training Centre for the Intellectually Disabled provided residential services to some 500 people with an intellectual disability. Caloola was not, as often described, a geriatric institution – approximately half of its residents were under the age of 50.
In 1985, responsibility for Caloola was passed from the Mental Health Division to the Office of Intellectual Disability Services. Caloola Training Centre closed in October 1992 as part of the deinstitutionalisation program. Part of the site became a Victoria University campus from 1994 to 2011, and the remainder (in 2016) is in use by the Department of Education and Training. It is now a heritage-listed site.

1100 Early Richmond
MR. W. J. WITTICK'S MEMORIES.
In the early days, Richmond especially that part bordering on the banks of the river now North Richmond, and Abbotsford was picturesque and romantic. There was a delight-ful stretch, of well-wooded country from Henty's home on Richmond Hill, built in 1851, across to the hill country on the other side of the River Yarra, and early residents frequently had the "pleasure" of being bushed" when trying to find their way home. Three years prior to the date mentioned, namely, in 1848, Mr. Walter John Wittick was born in Brook's lane, off Burnley Street, and as he is now 82 years of age he should be about the oldest Richmond native-born resident living. He was, in years which have flown by, an engine-driver in the employ of the Victorian Railway Department, which he joined on September 18, 1868 (though the Richmond line, which was constructed about 1860, was then the property of the Hobson's Bay Railway Co., but was purchased in the 'seventies by the Government). Mr. Wittick now resides at 12 Wellington street, Collingwood, with his daughter, Mrs. Reynolds, whose grand-daughter, Miss Clark, lives at 18 Buckingham, Street Richmond. Even within the memory of later residents the garden lands contiguous to the river at North Richmond, and stretching southward, were fragrant with flowers, and well cultivated, and Mr Wittick's reminiscences are full of interest. '"I remember," he said, speaking to Mr C. C. Blazey, the Town Clerk, "I remember Turnbull, in Victoria Street, at the corner of Burnley street. He had a garden, with plenty of fruit trees. Next to Turnbull's, in Burnley street, was Cole, the nurseryman.
Next was Ashton. He had a garden with fruit trees. Then Watt's garden, on the upper part of which a man named Coleman had a brickyard. On the south side of Brook's lane, Holzer had a brickyard, and made bricks there; my father being also a brickmaker, with a yard next to Holzer's, Bell likewise having a similar yard, the large deposits of clay being very suitable for bricks, as well as a distinct advantage for the growth of fruit trees. A man named Suckling also had a brickyard in the same area, and next to him was David Mitchell's property, which only extended halfway to the river. "A family named Dew lived in Burnley Street, and it was a Miss Dew whom David Mitchell married. Mitchell was one of the biggest brickmakers there, and afterwards went in for a -steam plant; for plugging the clay. He imported Clydesdale draught horses, employing a man named Scotch Jock to look after them, and he became a contractor, who built some of the most prominent structures in Melbourne, the last one which I remember being the Equitable building. The late Mr. Newbigin was his manager. "At the back of Mitchell's property: a man named Sells had about seven acres of orchard, and next to him along the river was David Clark's tannery, then Farrell's. and then Lambert's, in River street. "In River street there was a stockade, where convicts were kept, and I have recollections of a tree with a rope on it, and there was a legend attached to this that in earlier days convicts were hanged there. "Cole, the nurseryman, had another paddock of 25 acres in Victoria street, on the west side of Burnley street, and next to his place in Burnley street was a large paddock of 250 acres, stretching as far as Buckingham street, which was owned by Burnley, after whom the street was named. Many years afterwards the land was cut up and sold at five shillings a foot. Burn-ley lived on Church street hill, and was a very wealthy man. Dr. Horatio St. John Clarke had his surgery and home in Victoria street, then known as Simpson's road. It was then looked upon as a very swell place, and the building is still standing. Dr. St. John Clarke was a well-known justice of the peace, for many years associated on the bench with Mr. W. W. ,Shelley and Mr. O'Connor, who owned the property which is now the Richmond racecourse. There were rope works in Burnley street, which extended nearly as far as the town hall."
