1202 Grant Wanted For Pakenham Sth. Hall

Messrs J. Leadoux, R. Stephenson and Crozier waited on last meeting of Berwick Shire Council with a request for co-operation in converting the Pakenham South School building into a iiublic hall which would comply with the Health Department's requirements. In introducing the deputation Cr Houlihan said that after many years of effort the school building had been transferred from the Education Department to the Public Works Department.. He congratulated the' residents on what they had already achieved. , Stating fhat the deputation, on behalf of Pakenham South Scjiool Committee, sought council's co-opera tion in converting the building for use as a Hall, Mr Leadoux said they had £6OO in hand towards the cost of the work—£soo in the form of guarantees from five men and the balance money in'hand! They would be glad if council would call tenders on their behalf. The committee also sought permission to sell the old shelter shed for which they had received an offer of £25. Mr Crozier asked that council apply for a Government grant on a £2 for £1 basis towards the cost of the work. Mr R. Stephenson mentioned that the committee had obtained an estimate for the work and had also considered the possibility of carrying out the work by means of working bees, with a carpenter employed full time. They had been informed, how ever, that if they adopted the latter course they would not be eligible for a Government grant. Cr. Houlihan said it made little difference whether the title was held by the Public Works Dpartment or the council— work must be approved by the council. He assured them that council would give them every consideration. The President. Cr Anderson, also promised that council would give every consideration and would apply for the grant. In thanking council on behalf of the deputation, Mr Stephenson asked, that the application for a grant be made before June 30th.

Dr Harry Stephenson Lucraft, a cardiologist was employed at the Perth Hospital (later Royal Perth Hospital) from 1928 to 1953. His premature death occurred in 1953 at RPH.
As a photographer, he adopted the pictorialist style. Similar to other pictorialists, Lucraft favoured capturing misty scenes lacking focus, thereby imbuing his images with a romantic, emotional essence. He was known to have his camera with him at all times, often keeping it in his car.
Lucraft was an active member and president of the Van Raalte Club photographic group, established in Perth in 1926 by August Knapp. Initially known as the Dilettanti Club, its primary objective was to promote the study and practice of pictorial photography.
Lucraft, along with fellow members of the Van Raalte Club, showcased their work at Kodak in Hay Street. In 1933, two of Lucraft's photographs were selected by the Royal Photographic Society for an exhibition in London.
His subjects included the Fremantle train station, Pelican Point, Kalamunda Hills, and the University of Western Australia grounds.

1218 Hemiplegia /he.m?.pli?.d?i?/ is total paralysis of the arm, leg, and trunk on the same side of the body. Hemiplegia is more severe than hemiparesis, wherein one half of the body has less marked weakness.[1] Hemiplegia may be congenital or acquir ed from an illness or stroke.
Hemiplegia is not an uncommon medical disorder. In elderly individuals, strokes are the most common cause of hemiplegia. In children, the majority of cases of hemiplegia have no identifiable cause and occur with a frequency of about one in ever y thousand births. Experts indicate that the majority of cases of hemiplegia that occur up to the age of two should be considered to be cerebral palsy until proven otherwise.

1242 In the early 19c, in the neighborhood of Birmingham alone60,000 people men, women and children - were involved in the hand manufacture of iron nails.
They turned out something like 200 tons of nails, of numerous varieties and levels of quality, every week. Commonly an entire family would work together, confining themselves to a particulare class of nail.
There were about 300 sorts of wrought or forged iron nails alone. Specific names suggested the uses to which they were put - dec, wheelwright, hurdle, mop, etc.
Further divisions such as rose, clasp, clasp, diamond, pearl and sunken described the shape of the nail head; and flat, sharp, spear, needle and referred to their points. The terms fine, bastard and strong described their thickness.
The very finest quality nails were used for horseshoes; each nail required at least 35 blows of the hammer to draw it out fine enough to prevent it from cracking or breaking off in the horse's hoof.
Most nails required at least 25 blows of the hammer to form them. When the shank had been drawn out from the red hot rod to the required length, it was inserted into a heading tool, cut, turned and struck on the anvil. During this process, the
CONC ellows had to be worked several times.
The workers who forged the nails on the anvil were known as Nailors or Naylors. Each could make as many as four nails a minute - that's up to 3,000 a day.
What has happened to the traditional nail maker has happened to many other classes of industrial worker, who have seen their crafts swallowed up by automated processes or superceded by new inventions.

1244 INQUESTS.
Mr. Candler held an inquest on Thursday last, at Richmond, on the body of Walter Wittick, aged 61 years. Deceased was a brick maker, and on the previous Wednesday, between 2 and 3 o'clock, he was working in a square hole, picking clay, when suddenly the clay gave way, and fell on top of deceased, burying him completely. Though there was plenty of help, it was about an hour before he was got out, when he was quite dead. A verdict of acci-dental death was returned.
